Technical notes

A vCard QR code encodes a contact card (name, phone, email, company, address) in the VERSION:3.0 format. When a phone scans it, it previews the contact and offers to save it to the address book in one tap — practical for quick contact from a business card or email signature.

Because a vCard can carry many fields, the content can grow and the QR densifies (modules shrink). Each field you add enlarges the code; keeping only the needed fields (e.g. name + phone + email) gives a smaller code that scans more easily from a distance.

As content grows the QR version (matrix size) increases; if you want to place a logo in the center or print it small, you'll need a higher error-correction level, which increases the module count. On a long vCard these two effects combine into a very dense code.

For a more compact alternative, the MECARD QR code generator carries the same basic contact info in a shorter string. To share only a phone number, simpler content types may suffice; for general content see the QR code generator.

Frequently asked questions

Both carry contact info; vCard is a richer, standard format but longer, while MECARD is more compact and produces a smaller QR. For compatibility, vCard is more widely supported.
